Easy way to make sure you have the right file is to look for the one that is creeping up in file size (like: 3.4 of 9.5mb) It creeps up in file size as youtube loads the full content of the video.

@jaylaville I tried it on a new mac with Safari 5.1.1 and it seems to work fine. At first I thought nothing happened, then found the down arrow inside a small circle at upper right corner in Safari, clicked that and it shows download progress for long downloads.

It still works. I just did it on Safari 5.1.
safari has stopped this now, it just opens it up in a pop up window instead of downloading, and you cant do anything with the popup video ;-(
